The Quilt
The Quilt
(c) PJ Patty

Nine years have passed since we fixed the place
For our Faithful Friend who went away;
We mourned Her loss, but we took with love,
The Friend who came to stay.
Now by the side of that loved Friend
Our other Beloved Dog lies.
And I sometimes feel that my heart will break
With the hurt of so many goodbyes.
I have heard so may people say
"I don't want to be hurt again."
So they close their hearts, and they miss the joy
They could've found in another Friend.
They won't take the place of the Friend you lost;
For each Love shall stand alone.
But They'll become a part in a wonderful place,
A place to call all Their own.
The hurt that you thought would never heal
Will be part of the yesterdays.
The new Friend that joins you will be just as dear,
Only in a different way.
Each Faithful Friend that shares our hearts
Weaves its own patch of memories;
Each memory tucked in Their own special spot
Filling us with its own inner peace.
Over the years we spread out that quilt
And touch each special patch.

Gently remembering each tiny little
Rainbow step shared with us
As They made Their way to Their last.
We pass on that quilt to our family
Sharing each and every legacy
In hopes that they too will add to it
With each new Spirit living on in infamy.
One day we will hold that quilt and from it
A Rainbow will begin to grow;
Shining on the Bridge where They are waiting
To cross over till it was our time to go.
As we Cross the Bridge to join them
Their love shines through to light our path.
We cross through the Gate to enter together.
St. Peter welcomes each of us; the quilt is finished at last.

Tilley
Tilley survived Florida's bad 2005 hurricane season and was captured by animal control begging for burgers at the local McDonald's. Tilley's rescue from a high kill-shelter was precipitated by a flurry of last-minute alerts to rescuers to save her and resulted in a dramatic transport across Alligator Alley in the middle of the night. Once in safety, her rescuers pulled all the nuts, bolts, and miscellaneous hurricane debris from her tangled fur. It took many baths to get her to look and feel good.

Under the care of two foster homes (Ana and Mary), Tilley started to gain some much needed weight but, unfortunately, she was found to have a large mass of polyps in her ears. Tilley spent her final year of life in foster care. She passed away peacefully, surrounded by the love and compassion that had been missing from her "street life" before rescue.

Tito Burrito
Today was such a hard day. We had to say goodbye to one of the loves of my life...Tito Burrito. Although heartbroken, we'd like to celebrate his life. He was such a little sweetheart with a huge personality. Tito came to us 9 months ago, as a foster dog. He was 11 years old then and cute as a button. He only had 5 teeth, but wasn't afraid to let you know he'd use them :) He quickly worked his way into our hearts and it wasn't long before we adopted him. Tito LOVED his walks and treats. He was the oldest dog here, but you'd never know it at walk time. We REALLY loved him because he was just so easy to love and his smile brightened every day. All was well and he seemed healthy, up until a couple weeks ago, when he developed an eye issue. He was seen by the vets, and as his eye was getting quickly worse, it was decided that the eye needed to be removed. Today he was taken for surgery and it just about broke my heart to get the call from the vets that he had very aggressive brain cancer and the only kind thing to do for him would be to let him go. We drove there immediately and held him and told him how loved he is as he passed. Its been quite a shock. You are my sweetheart Burrito Boy, always have been. We will miss you more than you know and are SO thankful that you were in our lives, if only for a while. Be free Tito, be loved and know you were such a gift to us. Til we meet again, my little boy. ......Kim Stewart, April 17, 2020

Toby
My Toby crossed the rainbow bridge on July 18. We got him through ERU 14 1/2 years ago and I will be forever grateful. He was 16 1/2 years old ❤️.......Karen Kelly Benin, July 18, 2019

Toby Doby
With sadness in my heart and tears in my eyes as I write this my foster dog Toby Doby crossed over rainbow bridge tonite. He has been sick the past couple weeks and there was just to much going on he just could not fight it. He was only 9 years old. He came to me in September of 2014 with an attitude but I didn't care he was a great dog. Fly with the angels little man. Give Essie kisses to chip, Alfie, buddy, lucky, grandma and grandpa. This pic was taken this past April in ocean city where we walked the beach and the boardwalk and ate funnel cakes and boardwalk fries. Love u Toby.......Cheryl Brookman, June 6, 2016
