![]() Snow White was tied to a box the first 12 years of her life until some kind person noticed her laying in her yard in the same spot. The owners relinquished the urine and feces covered dog to the concerned citizen and then she was taken to ERU. Snow was a very sick girl. She had a leaking bladder and couldn't stand from being so ill with heartworm and severe arthritis in her hind legs. Her coat had quite a few bald spots which is a sign of poor nutrition. Snow even had a secondary infection due to the urine being held against the skin caused by her lying in it. To make matters worse, Snow could not withstand the heartworm treatment and a sanctuary would not take her without being treated. Catch 22. The suffering for Snow White was getting worse so it was decided that this little girl had suffered enough. Snow White got into rescue in April, 2005 but was truly free in September, 2005. ![]() Scrappy Doo was a playful and lovable little 18 pound fluff ball that was picked up by Detroit Animal Control. He didn't get adopted very fast in the shelter due to his 12-year old age but he did get rescued by ERU and was fostered by Gale. Scrappy loved to give Eskie kisses, ride in the car and he even got a 2-mile hike every day! Soon he was adopted by a "cops and courts reporter", Tereasa, and would sometimes go on assignments and meet the firefighters and deputies, which made everyone's day! He especially got excited when Tereasa would come home or Gale would visit. He knew belly rubs and romps in the snow were not far behind! Scrappy Doo's new, happy life wasn't to last long. He developed pancreatitis but stayed spry and playful due to medications. However, after four months and an especially painful night, Tereasa rushed him to the vet where a tumor was discovered. Little Scrappy Doo died in his owner's loving arms only 9 months after being adopted. But he will live in Tereasa's heart forever. ![]() Sonni came into rescue with a female eskie named Jenni. Two peas in a pod. At one point, Sonni saved his foster mommy when she suffered an episode of heat stroke while in the backyard. Sonni barked and barked and barked until someone came to their aid. Once his foster mommy came back from the hospital, he never left her side. Shortly after Jenni found her forever home, Sonni suffered a sudden and extreme series of seizures. Sadly, he never recovered and crossed to the Bridge while in the arms of his foster mom. She saved him, then he saved her. Sonni found his forever home with his foster mommy and she'll never forget him. Sonni passed away on September 12, 2006. Wait for us at the Bridge, Sweet Sonni. ![]() Sophia was named after the famous actress, Sophia Loren because her rescuers wanted her to have a special name with a bit of sophistication, charm and intrigue. You see, she was picked up as a stray in mid-June in Michigan. Her coat was a mess, she was mostly blind and she tested a strong heartworm positive. The ladies at the shelter were very sad when they found out she was sick, the chances of someone rescuing her would be slim. BUT, some wonderful people from ERU heard about her and they wanted to give her some dignity in her final days. Sophia's foster mommy in Illinois, Mary, felt she deserved to spend her final days in a home where someone loves her, not in a cold shelter. Sophia went to the bridge today, just a few days short of Christmas, 2006. She went there in the arms of someone who loved her, to join the Mayor and all the other bridge kids. Thank you to all the kind people who sponsored Sophia and helped make her final days surrounded by love and comfort. UPDATE: There was such an outpouring of sympathy and words of support when the news of Sophia's passing was made that Mary wanted everyone to know how touching the tributes were: "I don't know how to thank all of you for your kindness and support. Sophia is looking down, smiling, thinking WOW! I am a special girl!! When she first came to live here her tail was so small, especially for how big she was. Her tail grew to be big & beautiful. I know it is flying high today while her angels are reading all of the wonderful letters sent for her." ![]() Sparky, a senior of 17+ years, was rescued from a Miami shelter with a horrible case of canine flu and couldn't stand or eat well. He was severely matted and covered in fleas and ticks. Sparky spent the last 10 days of his life in clean, warm comfort instead of in a backyard, a street or cold shelter.
