Learn more about the American Eskimo Dog.
Hunter's history is not known. He was picked up as a stray and nobody claimed him; but he was clearly well cared for before this happened and does know some commands. Like most Eskies he can take some time to decide he's comfortable with you. Once he is comfortable with you though he will dedicate himself to staying with you at all times. He wants to be on the sofa with you, follow you around the house, go for rides in the car, and do anything else as long as he gets to be with his people. He loves to be petted and spends a of of time playing with the other dogs in his foster home. He will bark any time he hears something, or thinks he hears something, and feels he must investigate whatever he heard. This leads him to frequently charge around the house to determine what a noise was--usually another dog or person walking around. After he decides there's no threat after all, he'll settle down again. He is not food aggressive and gets along great with other dogs. He is very protective of his people and of the other dogs. This dog cannot be caged. He completely freaks out and gets very scared and aggressive if caged. He cannot go to any groomer, kennel, or veterinarian's office that will cage him, even for a few minutes. Hunter is very food or treat driven. He loves food and treats; but he's also a somewhat picky eater in a new environment. Now he's eating things he refused to eat initially--both food and treats. We have not found any pill or capsule antibiotic that doesn't make him sick. It may be that injections are the only way this dog can receive antibiotics. He is Lyme positive, this does not mean he has Lyme disease; it only means he's been exposed. We are working to ensure he is healthy before putting him up for adoption. This is why he's been getting antibiotics.
