Sophie is a very sweet and mellow dog who enjoys attention but seems quite content to just hang out on her bed (or the sofa) the rest of the time. She can really move fast when she's playing.
She is with several other dogs in her foster home and has had no serious problems with them, but she does need some time to adjust to new dogs. She wants to be close to her human at all times but isn't a velcro dog. Just laying on the floor nearby is fine--but being petted or getting treats is better.
Sophie needs training to teach her how to behave outside the home. Because of this, her adoptive family will be required to take her through an obedience course. The money to pay for this course has been donated so all her new family will need to do is make arrangements for the classes. She is good in the home but can become rather unmanageable if taken out for walks or to other locations on a leash. She has problems with her reaction towards other dogs when she is on a leash. She seems to simply want to get near the other dogs she sees to say "Hi." But she becomes very excited if the other dog is too far away for the leash to reach or if the other dog doesn't want to say "Hi" to her and will bark and pull at the leash to reach her new "friend". The other side of that is that she loves to go for walks and gets very excited when you get the leash. She's also very good on long drives. She also tolerates vet visits well.
She sometimes has issues with being brushed though it can be done if she trusts you and you're patient with her.

Good with Dogs, Good with Kids
Whenever possible Eskie Rescuers United tries to adopt out its dogs locally (or at least to adopters in adjoining states to where I'm being fostered). Please note that ERU processes LOCAL adoption applications before considering those from out of state.
If I'm not local to you, as explained above, and you really have your heart set on me, you will have to make special arrangements so ERU can get me to you safely (for example, flying me to you at your own expense, or paying a transport group to drive me to you). Note: We may ask that you to make a donation to cover transport costs if the distance is great and we have trouble finding transport drivers. There is an adoption fee required; and, please be aware, Eskie Rescuers United will not adopt out its dogs as outdoor dogs.
Eskie Rescuers United American Eskimo Dog Rescue, Inc. is an IRS-approved 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Please click the donation button below to make a tax-deductible donation through PayPal and help make a difference to even one American Eskimo dog!
