Basil is a very intelligent, active girl, who loves playing outside then cuddling up inside. She's content relaxing with you, but if you say the word 'walk', she launches herself around and does a little dance. The only thing she loves more than playing outside is playing with her dog-friends, and she can hold her own with the big dogs. She loves a good hike, and made it several miles through the woods with us once, happily trekking through streams and running up hills. We've jogged very short distances with her and she seems to love it, but we haven't gone far. We haven't walked her off leash, but if she darts out of the car (she LOVES car rides) or breaks free, she only goes a foot or two before she stops and happily waits for you. She tends to stay by your side in crowds as well, and does ok as long as she isn't directly approached. She can be very protective, and while she is doing better passing strangers while on walks, she struggles with new people coming in her home and needs to be in another room or she will react in fear. She loves acting as your own personal door bell but rarely barks otherwise. She is very affectionate and will ask anyone for a belly rub. If she particularly likes you, she loves a really good ear rub. She has a lot of difficulty with men; she tends to cower in one spot if she knows them, and is aggressive if she does not. Strange women upset her as well, but not always as much. She does well with small animals as far as we can tell. She would likely be fine with a cat, and has met one before with little interest. She did well with our ferrets, but in the beginning she would occasionally become too interested. They were never together without direct supervision, and she was kept up if they were roaming the floor. She hasn't reacted to them in months, and is content to sit in the armchair while they play below. Very rarely, she will make a half hearted attempt to chase a squirrel outside, but that's the extent of it. She knows 'walk', 'all done', 'up', 'ah-ah', and is doing well with 'lay'. We recently started working on 'wait', and she's picking it up quickly. She sometimes needs coaxing to eat, and can be very concerned with who is in the room with her while eating. She occasionally needs to be shown the water bowl or she'll 'forget' to drink, especially if it's in a different room than you. She has not shown food aggression, but recently was over protective of a bone when someone she didn't know well approached. However, she has never responded like this to us and we are able to take her bone just fine. At night, she will stay on her doggy bed next to the bed with no problem, and just prefers being in the same room.
Original bio (Basil's name was originally "Twister") = This sweet and fun eskie girl was rescued from a horrendous hoarding situation in TN with her siblings Barbie, Kelly and Winnie. Twister is remarkably healthy and loving considering her background. Twister's blood work was perfect and she is scheduled for a dental cleaning on July 15th. Twister loves to follow me wherever I go. She loves to run in the yard and is a very good traveler. Twister has a slight tilt to her head but does not show signs of any neurological disorder and in fact she is a very smart little girl. Twister has been going for walks in the neighborhood and has been doing really well with the leash. If you are interested in meeting this precious one please e-mail Heidi at hortmeye@gmail.com
